Kindred cycles is very happy to now be offering bicycle maintenance classes. Our mission statement is Kindred Cycles is a full service bicycle shop, born out of a love for bicycles and the people who ride them. Pittsburgh’s strong community of cyclists is our family, and it’s our mission to support them. We thought, what better way to support our cyclist than to encourage them to support themselves?
We will be teaching classes using the Park Tool School course curriculum. Through January and February we will offer the New Cyclist Maintenance Class and the Novice Class.
New Rider Maintenance (3 hours) 2/15/15
The New Rider Maintenance class will focus on helping a newer rider better understand the mechanical workings of his or her bicycle. This class will emphasize inspection and identification of issues more so than the real nitty gritty of fixing complex mechanical problems. This class is most useful for new cyclists who want to identify when their bicycle needs servicing as well as feel more confident preforming basic bicycle maintenance such as fixing a flat tire or lubricating a drivetrain.
Novice Class (8 hours) 1/18/15 & 1/25/15
The Novice Class is an 8 hour course, broken down into two 4 hour Sunday sessions. We will cover everything covered in the New Cyclist Maintenance Class but in addition to basic cleaning and lubrication we will cover adjusting brakes, shifting, basic (lateral) wheel truing, and assessing condition of the drivetrain (chain, gears, and crank). The Novice class is great for cyclists with little or no knowledge of bicycle mechanics who is seek to better understand the basics; either as a foundation for future learning, or to be able keep the bicycle running smoothly in between shop tune ups.
